Crows Nest
Crows Nest is a suburb located approximately 5 kilometres North of Sydney city, on the lower North Shore. It was founded in 1819, when Edward Wollstonecraft received a 524 acre land grant over both the modern-day suburb as well as Wollstonecraft and Waverton. He named 'Crows Nest House' on what later became site of North Sydney Demonstration School. According to his associate Alexander Berry, after whom the creed was named, Wollstonecraft chose the name for "its elevated commanding position". Today, Crows Nest is a significant commercial district noted for its varied shops and restrauants. At the junction of five main roads on the highest point of elevation in Crows Nest, about 1km North by Northwest of the original site of Crows Nest House. The gates of Crows Nest House still stand at the Pacific Highway entrance to North Sydney Demonstration School.
